Design Problem and Goals

Problem: Uncertainty of learner familiarity with learning platforms and ability to navigate effectively within those platforms

Goal: Provide JIT learning support to ensure a good learner experience within the course

Design Strategy

Implement a pull-information knowledge distribution strategy to support learners if they are not familiar with or certain on how to navigate the learning platforms utilized in the course

Development

As the learning experience designer, I created a readily accessible and engaging tutorial utilizing screenshots, images, music, video, and various visual and audio enhancements available through the Camtasia studio.

Amazon S3 Basics (Vyond)

These videos are part of a foundation course on Amazon S3. The first video is an introduction to the course and the other video supports content presented in the first module of the course.

Design Problem and Goals

Problem: How to create learning content that was originally purposed for adult learners with some technical skillset

Goals: Present technical content in an engaging and approachable manner to younger learners who are not of a technical background

Design Strategy

  • Analyze current content and evaluate how to present in a manner that will engage younger learning audience

  • Redistribute that content in a visual manner that resonates with the learner

  • Create a through-line for the content by creating a learning scenario allowing learners to relate and connect to the information being presented

  • Use video and case scenarios to create an immersive learning experience and opportunity for learners to take ownership within problem-solving

Development

As designer I was responsible for analyzing the content available and evaluating how it would meet learning goals and outcomes for the target audience. Conducting a needs and learner analysis, I identified the design of the course including instructional content, formative and summative assessments, instructional strategies, and learner engagement elements.

I built the five-module course in the H5P platform which allows for various instructional elements such as text, documents, video, images, audio, presentations, and assessment tools. I created six videos using Vyond (a Welcome to the Course video and a video for each module) that presented a fictional environment which the learner is a part of.

PM Concepts: Working in a Team Environment (Powtoon)

This video supplemented a discussion activity for a module in a project management course.

Design Problem and Goals

Problem: Asynchronous online learning environments can lack engagement qualities found in a traditional classroom setting

Goals: Include enhanced visual learning elements to increase engagement for a learning activity

Design Strategy

  • Revamp a traditional learner discussion activity to incorporate engagement and learning sustainment elements through auditory and visual stimulation

  • Present elements of sight and sound to connect emotionally and motivate learner attention, participation, and critical thinking

Development

Developed the story, video concept, and script to align with activity topic and learning objective; created the storyboard and constructed the video (including supplying the narration) using Powtoon.

Problem-Based Learning Scenarios

Videos from the PMO Case Scenario

The following videos were instrumental in supporting a course which utilized problem and scenario based learning as a fundamental learning strategy

PMO Case Scenario Video

Design Problem and Goals

Problem: How to improve the current capstone project for a course to make it more engaging and learner-centered

GoalsProvide visual components that support learning using a problem-based instructional strategy

Design Strategy

  • Create a narrative for a case scenario which learners would engage with throughout the course

  • Mimic real-world interactions and critical thinking to promote deep learning

Development

Learning designer working with a SME to identify learning needs, program outcomes, and resources to support learning content. Pitched the idea of problem-based learning scenario utilizing a case scenario to support learners’ navigation through the learning process. Created a case-scenario, including a backstory, story characters, video concept and script to leverage and align with instructional material identified by SME (view additional details linked here).

Collaborated with in-house video production to identify options to create a video simulating a real-world environment for the character of the PMO officer; identified visual elements that would apply properly for the various fictious environments determined as part of the case narrative; served as executive producer sourcing talent for the video, coordinating and scheduling the one-day video-shoot; served as editor during post-production.

Utilized Storyblocks platform for stock footage; video created by production team utilizing Adobe Premier Pro.

Design Problem and Goals

Problem: Overcoming the disconnect to information on technical concepts for a non-tech learning audience

Goals: Present learning of highly technical concepts in a manner that is approachable, actionable, and learner-centered

Design Strategy

  • Create a ten-module course on various foundational topics related to AI concepts positioned to learners in a manner that is digestible and not cognitively overwhelming

  • Present technical ideas in a meaningful context that allow learners to connect to relevance in real-world applications

  • Provide a business case where learners can critically analyze, and formulate solutions to solve, real-world business problems

Development

Worked with SME to create basis for case-scenario. Developed case narrative that aligned with module topics and learning outcomes. Identified visual (video and images) elements and supplemental learning content that supported case-scenario narrative and course outcomes.

Created storyboard for SME approval and collaborated where necessary to overcome any design concerns. Built six-part visual case using course authoring tools (versions in both Articulate Rise and H5P).

Design Problem and Goals

Problem: Drag and drop learning activity was initially created using H5P and needed converted to prompt scenario block activity presented in Articulate Rise

Goals: Successfully convert a learning activity created using a different authoring tool

Design Strategy

Create a similar experience from the original activity using a different tool with different functionality

Development

As designer, I analyzed the various option within the new authoring tool and identified most effective means to mimic the learning outcome intended from the initial tool.
